Pens superstar Evgeni Malkin may not have been ready for a scrap but he should've been. After all, game over, handshakes, he tussles the kids helmet. That was it, the little guy may have only been 7 but he went after the big guy and got in a few shots.
Malkin was playing in a charity event on a team with Russian high-school players from Tver, north of Moscow. The event was organized by former-NHLer llya Kovalchuk, now with SKA St. Petersburg of the KHL.
After the game was over, as players were shaking hands, Malkin gave the mini-pugilist the helmet-tussle and the kid turned and went for him. They scraped from the center-ice area all the way to a face-off circle to the left of a net. The refs kept a watch on the scrap but let 'em go at it, doubtless packers giving in to the crowd, who were cheering.
Verdict? No one else is calling packers it this way but Malkin actually won, he got in a few 'shots' and almost pulled the little guy's jersey over his head. According to hockeyfights.com he's had four scraps before but without a clear win. They list his June 1 playoff fight with Boston Bruin Patrice Bergeron as the last NHL fight of the 2013 season.
Overall, considering the huge size difference this kid acquitted himself well so if your NHL club doesn't have enough grit - you can always use more grit - consider sending the tape along to your G.M. Entry-level contracts being what they are maybe they can fit this kid under the salary cap.
