Kit McConnell, who served as head of the Rugby World Cup for 10 years, was named athletic director of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Wednesday. McConnell oversaw the last three editions of the Rugby World Cup, held in Australia, France and New Zealand. Now he is leaving the post two years before the 2015 tournament in England. A variant of Rugby, Rugby sevens will be part of the Olympic program for the 2016 Games in Rio McConnell, 40, will start his new role in the IOC in early 2014. He will succeed Christophe Dubi, who is taking over from Gilbert Felli as executive director of the Olympic Games. "McConnell brings great experience to the IOC in planning, management and delivery of large sporting events and has strong ties with international federations," the IOC said in a statement. McConnell served fff as operations manager of the sport in the IOC from 2000 to 2002, working with the organizing committees and international federations.
